Emily has always been passionate about connecting with others and forming relationships, which ultimately fuels her mission as a therapist. She is an artist at heart, and incorporates creative arts into her work any way she can, such as drawing, painting, collages, metaphors, music, etc. Art has the ability to provide a back-door approach into one’s emotional brain and experiences. It provides a hands-on way to explore, visualize, and name deep emotions clients may not be aware of or ready to talk about, especially regarding trauma.
Regarding her work with children:
She understands no child is the same, as a child’s age, stage of development, and environment greatly influence their behaviors. She welcomes children into a space where they are free to be, discover, and experience their authentic self regardless of where they are developmentally or emotionally. Much of this involves learning to navigate emotions, which can often feel “too big” to handle as a child. Emily enjoys empowering children not only to understand, but to accept their emotions as contributions to who they are.
Regarding her work with teens:
Being a teenager is hard. Navigating middle school and high school, along with an onset of changing hormones and emotions, is exhausting both for the teen and for parents. Emily’s desire is to assist teens in understanding their place in the world, establishing and forming their identity, and begin strengthening their self-reflection and emotional awareness. Therapy sessions will not be just talking. The teen population is where Emily’s creative arts therapy approach gains most traction and benefit.
Emily utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy, creative arts therapy, client-centered, mindfulness- based therapy, internal family systems (IFS) and play therapy techniques into her sessions. Her aim is to find the ways in which each client, whether child, teen, or young adult experiences feeling seen and heard. Therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach, and therefore Emily is flexible in exploring techniques that will benefit her clients’ personal growth.
